Description

Beautiful OLD RARE Vase
signed SHIRLEY – Lupton, Arizona 10-17-55.
Possibly (SHIRLEY BENN NAMPEYO?)
This vase measures 5
1/4″ high x 5″ wide. It does have some wear commensurate with its
age, no cracks. Please examine pictures closely.
As far as I can see, there is nothing now in Lupton, AZ but a truck stop and a few small churches.  Not 100% this says Lupton, AZ.  But that’s my best guess.  This would have been a likely spot for roadside selling back in the 50’s, being a truck stop on Route 66.
This is a beautiful
traditional older Hopi sityatki vase. We do not know conclusively who created
this pot and are not attributing it to a particular Hopi potter, we’ve had it a
long time. The only Shirley we do know of is Shirley Benn Nampeyo who is primarily
known as a jeweler but also made pottery.
Shirley Benn Nampeyo,
Hopi/Tewa, active 1950-80: Pottery, jewelry, necklaces, and pins Shirley is the
Great-granddaughter of Nampeyo; granddaughter of Annie Healing; niece of Rachel
Namingha Nampeyo; daughter of Daisy Hooee; sister of Louella Naha Inote and
Raymond Naha; wife of Virgil Benn. Shirley Benn Nampeyo is Hopi-Tewa, but
worked at Zuni Pueblo.
“I learned most of my
pottery from my grandmother, and when I got to doing more my mother helped with
shaping. She taught me the ways to make them. The pottery maidens [Zuni Olla
Maidens, a performance group that carries large water jars on their heads]
would come in summertime, and she [Daisy] would help them make pottery. I
learned to mix paint from my mom and learned about the designs, where they come
from. I am also a silversmith, I do channel work, necklaces, bolos, and
pins.” -Shirley Benn (Dillingham 1994).
“I really enjoy making
pottery, maybe more than jewelry. We spend time in both Zuni & Hopi. Hopi
is where I make our pottery because we are surrounded by houses in Zuni and the
smell of the manure is not appreciated by our neighbors. Zuni has built up,
before no one was around our house.”
